TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU

Hey, I’m Steve from Gloucestershire. I’ve always been into engineering, especially big projects.

WHAT IS YOUR WORKING BACKGROUND? IF YOU LIKE TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER BREAK

After dedicating eight fulfilling years to serving as a Royal Navy submariner, I found myself at a crossroads in 2020. While the camaraderie and the challenges of the job were deeply rewarding, the quest for a satisfactory work-life balance prompted me to reassess my career trajectory. Coincidentally, as the first lockdown unfolded, I made the significant decision to bid farewell to the Royal Navy. I began working with a local swimming pool company, but I wanted to still be involved with the navy. I would keep an eye out for job opportunities that would fit.

WHAT BARRIERS HAVE YOU FACED WHEN APPLYING FOR ROLES?

Before joining the STEM Returners Programme, I explored roles like my previous ones. Many required qualifications I didn’t have. I thought, “Why bother applying? My CV won’t stand a chance.” It’s a common feeling, but I’ve come to realise that sometimes, opportunities arise unexpectedly, and qualifications aren’t always the sole factor. My unique experiences and skills could still be valuable assets in a new field.

HOW DID STEM RETURNERS HELP?

STEM Returners really helped me see that there’s more to me than what fits on a CV – those “hidden” qualities that don’t get enough credit. It made me realise that beyond the degrees and qualifications, there’s a bunch of unique skills and experiences that are just as valuable in the professional world. I consider myself a confident person, but whenever I checked out job openings in fields I liked, I couldn’t shake off thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “I won’t fit the role.” But STEM Returners helped me see past these ideas.

WHAT WAS THE END RESULT?

Following a thorough selection and interview process, I was thrilled to be offered a 12-week job placement. Every moment during this period was enjoyable, thanks to the fantastic and incredibly supportive team I was assigned to. At the culmination of the 12 weeks, having completed the paid placement, I was delighted to be offered a permanent role.

HOW HAS THIS CHANGED YOUR CAREER?

I cannot emphasize enough how STEM Returners has positively transformed my career trajectory. It has provided a real opportunity for personal and professional development, allowing me to acquire the elusive “qualifications” while working within a discipline I genuinely enjoy.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE PROGRAMME OVERALL?

I can’t speak highly enough about the STEM Returners programme – it’s nothing short of amazing. The team at STEM Returners has played a pivotal role in not just facilitating opportunities for me but also in boosting my self-confidence. Their ability to recognise transferable skills in me that I may have overlooked has been transformative. The guidance and support I’ve received from the STEM Returners team have been invaluable.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR RETURNERS LIKE YOURSELF?

For those contemplating a return to their former career or considering a change in their professional trajectory, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. While the prospect may seem daunting, particularly in today’s economic climate, the potential for personal and professional growth is substantial. Don’t let apprehensions deter you; the journey may have its challenges, but the rewards and fulfilment that come from pursuing new opportunities are often well worth the effort. Embrace the possibilities and embark on your path with confidence.
