Department of Education 

Position Summary:

Our Lady of the Lake University is seeking a dedicated and innovative
Assistant/Associate Professor of Special Education with a strong emphasis on bilingual populations to join our dynamic faculty. The
successful candidate will contribute to the department’s commitment to advancing research, instruction, and outreach related to special
education, with a preferred focus on the unique needs and challenges faced by bilingual learners with disabilities. 

Assistant
or Associate Professor in the Education Department with content expertise in Special Education will have the following key
responsibilities:

Teaching and Curriculum Development

  • Refine and develop the curricula for the Special
    Education specialization at the undergraduate and graduate levels; update curricula that reflects the latest research and best practices in
    the field.
  • Integrate additive emergent bilingual pedagogy into Special Education classes
  • Develop and teach undergraduate
    and graduate courses in Special Education, with a focus on bilingual populations.
  • Teach face to face and online undergraduate and
    graduate courses in the program
  • Work collaboratively with the Bilingual Education/ESL Coordinator and Education faculty to develop
    the courses for the following programs:

    • Bilingual Special Education certification at the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • MEd in Curriculum and Instruction concentrations: Diverse Populations and in Dual Language and Special Populations.
  • Employ diverse instructional methods to engage students in effective learning experiences

Research and
Scholarship

  • Conduct original research in the area of Special Education, with an emphasis on bilingual learners with
    disabilities.
  • Publish research findings in reputable academic journals and present at relevant conferences.
  • Seek external
    funding opportunities to support research initiatives.

Advising and Mentorship

  • Provide academic
    and career guidance to students pursuing degrees in Special Education.
  • Mentor graduate students in their research projects
  •  Supervise practicum students, clinical teachers, and internship candidates

Service and Outreach

  • Collaborate with community organizations, school districts, and stakeholders to address the needs of bilingual learners with
    disabilities.
  • Serve on departmental and university committees to support the institution’s mission.

Inclusivity and Diversity

  • Promote inclusivity and diversity within the department and university, fostering
    an environment that values and respects all individuals.

Continuing Professional Development

  • Stay current with emerging research, pedagogical approaches, and technologies in the field of Special Education.

Requirements:

Qualifications: 

  • A doctoral degree in Special Education or
    related field; must have 18 hours of Special Education at the graduate level 
  • Demonstrated expertise in Special Education,
    particularly in working with emergent bilingual learners with disabilities. 
  • Licensed as a Special Education teacher in the
    candidate’s respective state 
  • At least three years full-time teaching experience in Special Education in elementary, middle or
    secondary school settings 
  • Professional identity as a Special Educator demonstrated through professional memberships,
    licenses, certificates, professional development, renewal activities, professional service, advocacy, and research or scholarly
    activity 
  • Experience teaching at the university level and a commitment to effective pedagogy. 
  • Evidence of
    collaborative, community-engaged work. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Ability to mentor and
    advise students effectively. 
  • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Preferred
Qualifications
 

  • Demonstrated research agenda with an emphasis on Special Education or field-based teacher
    education 
  • Experience supervising/mentoring and coaching clinical teachers and/or professional interns 
  • Experience advising undergraduate and graduate students. 
  • Experience providing clinical supervision 
  • Teaching experience in urban school environments with diverse student populations 
  • Bilingual in second language
    (English-Spanish preferred) 
  • Grant writing experience
